Hawaii B-Cycle

Hawaii B-Cycle

In the last  “Re: HI” issue we talked about Honolulu city’s bike plan. Over the weekend I just happened to find in Kailua town a unique program to help get people pedaling.

I went to Kailua town last Sunday and saw a shiny, solar-powered bike station next to Muumuu Heaven. The station belongs to a bike-share program called Hawaii B-Cycle. It is a pilot program sponsored by the state. You can just select a bike and start pedaling! Well, actually you can purchase a membership online or you can pay $5 for a one day pass at the station. The first fifteen minutes are free if you just want to try it out. You can return the bike to the same kiosk or another kiosk located on Kailua Road across the street from Times.

I think Kailua town is an ideal location to cruise around on a bike since restaurants and stores are centrally located and the town is mostly flat. Beautiful Lanikai beach and lush, Kawainui Marsh are a short pedal away.

Hopefully, the program will be successful and more stations will be built, not only around Kailua, but around the entire state!
