The New Safeway Beretania
Oahu’s newest Safeway store. Opening Winter 2011. Construction is underway on Beretania Street at the site of the former Schuman Carriage auto dealership.
We at Clarence Lee Design are excited to announce that we are currently working with Safeway on their environmental signage and sign master plan. The new market would be similar in size to Safeway’s Kapahulu Avenue store, which opened in 2007. We have also worked on signage and graphics at that location. I’m not especially fond of “sideways” lettering (second picture). I’d rather see the letters cascade down.

Bill – Thank you for your input. The sideways SAFEWAY logotype is per the Client’s corporate design guidelines. We normally do not recommend changes to their corporate brand, as this is nationwide. In addition, there are code limitations that prohibit a sign from projecting too far from the side of a building (6′ max. for a Sign Master Plan) – this would severely limit the size in horizontal format. Lastly, a sign which is perpendicular to the wall would allow for greater visibility (from a greater distance) vs. mounted flat against the wall, when traveling along these one-way, high volume traffic corridors. Although we agree w/ your assessment from a purely aesthetic standpoint, there were many other considerations involved.
