Eco-packaging delivers a corporate message

“Going Green”, is something you hear quite often these days, it’s become almost cliché. Nowadays around the globe not only individuals, but companies alike all want to help “pitch in” wherever they can to help the environment, “sliming things down, and shaping things up.”
When you think of helping the environment, chances are the term “plate lunch” has probably never come up. However for local people in Hawaii it’s an everyday thing. Basically a term used for a typical Hawaii local take-out lunch, the standard ingredients include two scoops white rice, one scoop macaroni salad, and topped off with some large main dish, usually in the form of some Pork Katsu or Hamburger Steak-isc type meat. Traditionally these plate lunches would be packaged in the classic white Styrofoam container, however nowadays eco-friendly, “green” containers are being spotted more and more.
Many local eateries here in Hawaii have begun implementing these environmental friendly containers. The containers are made up of various biodegradable materials such as Sugarcane, Corn and Potato Starch. Not only the containers though, even the utensils such as forks, knifes, and spoons, have also started being produced via these “green” materials.
Aside from the lunch line, other places are using eco-friendly plate lunch containers as well, however in unexpected ways. Crazy Shirts is a Hawaii based, long-time famous t-shirt company. In order to help push their eco-friendly clothing line, they use “green” plate lunch containers to help display their clothing line. The clothing themselves are “eco-unique” as they are all individually dyed in various recyclable, and reusable products, so the two go hand-in-hand. These eco-materials range from recycled plastic bottles, to Hibiscus petal dyes, to even actual money! By incorporating this eco plate lunch container display combo, Crazy Shirts is able to make a good impact on the customer, but also at the same time helping each of us become more environmental consciousness.
In today’s global community, it’s become somewhat of a standard that companies take social responsibility over their effects on the environment. However with “green” practices becoming more common everyday, the benefits are not only for environment, but also for the companies themselves, whose image is portrayed to the community. I hope to see more local companies jumping on the train in contributing to a more “green” Hawaii.
